We were invited by friends to attend the grand opening of Helix by Exploratorium last night in Los Altos. One of these friends (more of his work on view here; scroll down to bottom of page) worked on the beautiful balloon LED exhibit you see here in these photos. Each balloon has an LED element inside of it that is programmed to change colors in time with music (live music). It’s like the balloons are singing in color – so cool!
They call Helix a community science center. You can play with exhibits there, shop for science-type products and toys and take in talks by scientists; last night we attended one on things that glow. If you live in the area, you might want to stop in this weekend. The grand opening party (with lighting exhibit) continues this evening and next (Dec. 14 & 15) until 8 pm. Have you been to Los Altos lately? That place is hopping! Well, not the night life, but the retail and cultural amenities for sure. I guess I know where the big Silicon Valley money is landing. SFMOMA is even holding exhibits there while their San Francisco site is closed for renovation. If you go be sure to check out The Makery. I picked out an early Christmas gift for myself in their shop last night – a California bear print by 3 Fish Studios. It’s the first one you can see here.
Here’s what Helix looked like from the street last night. And just a few storefronts down, I found the charming vignette below in a shop window – a nice juxtaposition to the new science center, don’t you think?
