Whole Wheat Honey Wafers

February 3, 2012 by mymateriallife

This was my homage to Groundhog Day yesterday – Maida Heatter’s Whole Wheat Honey Wafers cut with a Foose Tinsmithing groundhog cookie cutter. You might not have thought you could find a groundhog cookie cutter, but Foose offers such an extensive range.  And this is the perfect recipe for the groundhog cutter.  These cookies are made with 100% whole wheat flour, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it or mind for that matter.  They’ve also got cinnamon, ginger, instant coffee, brown […]

Greenwich Village Brownies

January 18, 2012 by mymateriallife

If you’re looking for toilet paper roll knitting nancy ideas, do stay tuned.  I promise that I have some new, fun projects to share very soon.  In the meantime, I’ve been baking.  This time, brownies for a special Brownie (of the Girl Scout variety) ceremony last night.  As much as I love Maida Heatter, I usually make the Goddess of Chocolate’s (Alice Medrich’s) cocoa brownie recipe.  But I needed a recipe with a large yield for last night’s event and […]

Craig Claiborne’s Cardamom Cookies

December 4, 2011 by mymateriallife

I baked these this morning as a thank you gift for my former co-worker neighbor and friend who catsits for us now and then.  I found the recipe in one of my Maida Heatter cookbooks, Maida Heatter’s Brand-New Book of Great Cookies.  Do you know Maida Heatter?  I wish I knew her in person.  In fact, I wish she was my next-door-neighbor and that she would invite me over for a glass of wine while she baked cookies for us; […]

Maida Heatter’s Danish Butter Sandwiches

June 21, 2010 by mymateriallife

I know these look like peanut butter cookies because of the fork indentations, but they are really quite something else – Danish Butter Sandwiches from my favorite baker, Maida Heatter.  And really, with the amount of fat in these cookies you might as well be eating butter sandwiches!  But for a special occasion (an adult tea party perhaps?) they are fantastic.  Of course it helps if you enjoy the taste of brown butter because that is the predominant flavor of […]
