Easing into the New Year

January 5, 2012 by mymateriallife

The problem with the holidays is that even if you get through them on a relatively even keel, you are bound to feel some let-down as you and everyone else returns to the work-a-day world.  If this never happens to you then you are made of stronger stuff than me – more power to you! If, however, you don’t yet feel the energy to try to lose that weight or organize your entire household (my constant goal) or pursue whatever […]

One Sketch A Day

December 31, 2011 by mymateriallife

Lots of people claim they just can’t draw and seem to believe you’re either born with the ability or you’re not.  I think of drawing – or sketching which is what I like to do – as really just another muscle that we can either choose to exercise or not.  I love to do quick sketches with pen and what I love about them is this – even a bad or mediocre one is so much better than no sketch […]

Beaded Pumpkins

December 22, 2011 by mymateriallife

Why bead a pumpkin?  Well – why not?!  And if not at Christmas time, when? These are impractical, a little magical, and very sparkly.  That makes them just right for these shortest days of the year if you ask me. And these are not only beaded, but gilded and silvered too.  They were inspired by an Anthropologie store display that I saw in October.  They used larger white pumpkins with actual silver and gold metal applied to one section of […]

Sew and Print a Party Bunting

October 17, 2011 by mymateriallife

Triangular fabric buntings have become very popular recently, haven’t they?  I especially love to see them hanging outdoors.  They’re so much better than the primary colored plastic ones I remember seeing in used car lots way back when. The version above was inspired by the bunting you can see here from Marie Claire Idées.  I knew that if we had our own anniversary party, I would have to include something whimsical in the backyard that was inspired by that article. […]

The Anniversary Party

October 12, 2011 by mymateriallife

Exactly eleven days ago, we decided how to properly celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.  We thought we’d have a champagne fountain and cupcake party at home, so that’s exactly how we celebrated yesterday, October 11, 2011, with 43 friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers in attendance. We knew a champagne fountain would lend the proper ambience to this event, but as it turned out, we couldn’t actually drink from it.  I was warned by the rental company that the circulation […]

Best Under $5 Bubbly – St. Patrick’s Day Style

March 17, 2011 by mymateriallife

When we hit on this idea three years ago, Dwight and I couldn’t believe that we’d never thought of it sooner.  Sparkling wine is the alcoholic beverage of choice for both of us, so it just makes sense.  I only wish there was a natural food coloring I could use that would match that green.  But this is not something you do every day, so I try not to worry about a drop or two once a year.  And isn’t […]

love is…

February 14, 2011 by mymateriallife

I found this book last year around Valentine’s Day, and I just had to buy it because it reminds me of my mom.   She used to love these little comics and would post them on bulletin boards in our house in Southern California in the 70s.  It’s a very sweet book with an introduction by the cartoonist’s son, Stefano Casali.  His mother, Kim, made little drawings as love notes for his father, Roberto, and not long after Roberto showed […]

Fun Felt Valentine Projects

February 11, 2011 by mymateriallife

Aren’t these great?  They come from two favorite craft blogs, Living Crafts (from the magazine by the same name) and The Purl Bee (from the Purl Soho shop in New York).  The heart that’s hanging on top is actually a little pocket that I’ll use to hold the hair clips and maybe a couple of white chocolate hearts for Samantha. Then she can wear it as a necklace.  It was fun to practice a little beading which adds so much […]

New Year, New Japanese Stationery

January 4, 2011 by mymateriallife

My friend Jill was just telling me how much she enjoys shopping for a new calendar, and I have to agree that this is one of the simple pleasures of the new year.  For the past six years, I’ve bought myself a weekly planner at Maido on Santana Row. I love that shop; I made it over there today.  And though I didn’t find the weekly planner I usually purchase, I did find some great stuff – most of it […]
