A Little Wool With Your Kool-Aid?

September 5, 2012 by mymateriallife

This is so much fun and so easy.  I read about dying yarn with Kool-Aid in the book, Kids Knit! Simple Steps to Nifty Projects by Sarah Bradberry.  The thing is, I was sure I could make it work with cotton, so last summer I set about boiling some white Sugar ‘n Cream in Kool-Aid and water and I pretty much ended up with … white cotton.  My college motto was “learn by doing” and I find that I still […]

Dream Machine: Tricotin Mecanique

August 6, 2012 by mymateriallife

For all you knitting Nancy fans out there (toilet paper roll or otherwise), here is something to add to your collection.  This is a mechanical French knitter from Bergere de France that is actually made in France.  It’s a lot of fun to turn the crank and watch your knitted cord grow and grow and what beautiful cord it is!  I’m still experimenting with it, but I can tell you it is essential to use the weight that’s included and […]

Mrs. Richards’ Coin Purse / Credit Card Case

April 27, 2012 by mymateriallife

I took this photo yesterday at the last session of our school’s six-week beginning knitting class.  This little card case was knit by Katelyn, one of our students.  It’s very cool, isn’t it?  I love how Katelyn selected that red button to go with her “hot green” Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn.  This is a project that my co-knitting teacher, Mrs. Richards came up with because it would give the kids practice on the skills they would need to complete […]

A Gift From The Lonely Doll by Dare Wright

April 26, 2012 by mymateriallife

Source: A Gift From The Lonely Doll, Dare Wright Are you familiar with the Lonely Doll series by Dare Wright?  I think this one (A Gift From The Lonely Doll, 1966) might be my favorite.  The photos are so beautiful.  Look at the lighting in the middle photo; I’m crazy about that one.  And then there’s that knitting.  I think I’m going to read this to the kids at today’s last Sticks & Strings knitting class session.  I’ve put together […]

Adventures With I-Cord

March 31, 2012 by mymateriallife

This is more of the 2-stitch variety (you can also see it used here).  It’s shown above as a replacement for the white cord that came with my American Apparel hooded sweatshirt that I purchased last Fall.  The yarn is something called 2nd Time Cotton by Knit One Crochet Too in beluga blue.  It’s an 8-ply yarn spun from recycled cotton from the apparel and textile industry – at 8-ply not necessarily a good choice for cord (more potential […]

Toilet Paper Roll Knitting Nancy Idea #6: Groovy Belt

March 22, 2012 by mymateriallife

This is a 32-inch length tube knit on an eight-stick toilet paper roll nancy.  Have we talked about binding off the knitting nancy yet?  For most of my previous projects, I’ve simply cut and then threaded my working yarn through each loop as I’ve pulled it off a popsicle stick, finally pulling the yarn up tight once I put it through the last loop.  Another method is to move your last knitted loop to the next popsicle stick (moving in […]

Bella Drawstring Backpack

March 5, 2012 by mymateriallife

This is the project we are going to make in the beginning knitting class I’m going to teach at Samantha’s school (with our school librarian!) later this month.  I really didn’t want to have the kids knit a scarf, so I came up with this.  You could certainly make it a little larger for an adult.  Here it is shown on an eight-year-old, along with the T-shirt that inspired the stripe pattern and colors.    I’m hoping the kids find […]

Moss Beach Poncho Prototype

February 7, 2012 by mymateriallife

I’ve been wanting to make a poncho like this forever.  I think I first saw one like it in Interweave magazine years ago.  It was knit in a rib pattern around the body, one color, and I loved how one short side was seamed to the end of one long side to close the poncho.  My knitting friends and I had a discussion about it at one of our recent sessions (two of us were inspired by friends we’d […]

Toilet Paper Roll Knitting Nancy Idea #5: Chic Winter Doll Accessories

January 24, 2012 by mymateriallife

Dolly loves to pull her hair back, but she doesn’t like her ears to get cold, so this combination headband/ear warmer is perfect for her.  She thinks the pom-poms add just the right touch.  Dolly embraces her youthful, somewhat old-fashioned style and appreciates how it sets her apart from some of the newer dolls in the household (many from faraway lands – yet oddly, almost all blondes). Piper is from Australia.  She’s a beach girl who hates to cover up, […]
