My Material Life

Mrs. Richards’ Coin Purse / Credit Card Case

I took this photo yesterday at the last session of our school’s six-week beginning knitting class.  This little card case was knit by Katelyn, one of our students.  It’s very cool, isn’t it?  I love how Katelyn selected that red button to go with her “hot green” Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn.  This is a project that my co-knitting teacher, Mrs. Richards came up with because it would give the kids practice on the skills they would need to complete their backpacks.  It really turned out to be the perfect project for our class.  Small scale, fairly easy to knit (even with a buttonhole!), functional, good-looking – in a word, brilliant! It is simply a 6″ length of garter stitch (cast on 15 stitches) with a simple yarn over buttonhole that has been folded and seamed on each side.  The buttonhole should be knit into the third row by knitting 7, yarn over, knitting 2 stitches together, and knitting 6.  I believe that using the purse to hold credit cards was Katelyn’s mom’s idea.  Katelyn’s mom is one of the awesome teachers at our school, so I’m not at all surprised she would contribute such a good idea!  Anyone could use one of these to hold all those cards we end up with these days.  In fact, my friend Susan and I found a really interesting yarn at Uncommon Threads in Los Altos yesterday.  I think it was a silk-wrapped cotton or something like that and we were talking with the lady working there about what to make with it.  I told Susan that I knew exactly what I would make with it – a small purse.  Now I know which one I’m going to try first!  But first I have to get back up to Los Altos and buy some of that yarn…

Anyway, well done to Katelyn, Mrs. Richards, Katelyn’s mom and all of our young knitters!
