In which Hubert joins his parents in their bedroom for cocoa every night.
This may be my favorite Lauren Child book so far. It’s not new – my library copy was published in 2004 – but I don’t think it’s very well known and that’s a shame. I wanted to donate it to our school library this year in honor of Samantha’s birthday, but the library book binding service the school uses doesn’t offer it in its catalog. They do have Child’s newer poodle book and we have that one at home too, but I just like Hubert better. How could I not with that title, those parents, the plaid pjs, the cocoa. Not to mention Child’s fantastic art and her obvious love of fine furnishings and materials and all things domestic. Plus a good story, of course.
Last year we donated Child’s version of The Princess and the Pea. Have you seen it? It’s genius, pure genius. A wonderful mix of miniatures and paper art, photographed by Polly Borland. The images below are just a small sample from the book.

I wish I had some PJ’s like that! I also enjoy that book very much.
Maybe I could make you some!
