I wasn’t sure what to call these. Penzey’s (the recipe source) calls them cutout cookies which is certainly a good description. Lots of people would probably call them sugar cookies, but one of the things I like about these is that they are not terribly sweet. They are delicious though – even when left undecorated – and the dough goes together so quickly and is very forgivable and easy to work with. I rolled, cut and decorated the cookie in the photo this afternoon, but three 6-year-olds on a playdate were pretty much able to roll and certainly cut and decorate their own too. They bake for just 6 minutes and you don’t even have to chill the dough before rolling and cutting. A real keeper of a recipe. You’ll find it here on the Penzey’s website.
